Having issues with RT-AC87R again??

What is up with these new routers man? This is the 2nd ac87 I have gotten and it is rebooting on its own again. First few days it was working with no issues at all, now it reboots, drops 5g signal all the time. I am running merlins fw, not the new one that is out but the one before that one ( sorry i am using my phone to wirte this)

I am at a loss, are we just getting faulty units or is the fw messed up? I love Asus products, my whole gaming rig is pretty much all asus!!

I really do not want to go get a netgear product, but I really do not know what else to do.

Any recommendations on another router other then a asus router. I only use the basic fuctions on this thing, other than QOS thats pretty much it.

The question then is... why are you not using the latest firmware?

Did you try the official Asus firmware?

Are you tweaking settings that you shouldn't (or maybe not tweaking settings that you should)?

Have you tried a reset to defaults and entering only the most basic settings to get the router connected to your ISP?

First, if you haven't already reflash the router. And seeing as you are going to do a factory reset anyway (what have you got to lose, right?) do it now before flashing. As for firmware versions to try all I can say is good luck. I am having great luck with Asus Beta 376_3561. Now it is no better than Merlin's firmware, it is just working for me and working great so I am too chicken-shirt to make any changes right now.

See the attached image of my range extender's status page. The AC87R & the REA20 are ~14 feet shy of being separated by the entire length of my house. As you can see the 5GHz band is actually out-performing the 2.4GHz band, 86% to 85%!

So you may as well as experiment. Oh, after doing the factory reset I would also put the router into recovery mode and use the firmware recovery utility to flash the router (if I were in your predicament). Then I might perform a factory reset after flashing and manually reenter your configuration settings. Using a saved config file to cheat defeats the purpose of the reset(s) and is a bad idea. I am going to try the Asus FW and see how that goes.

The only tweaking I do to the router are

1. Change wifi passwords and router passwords.
2. Change wifi channels so I can get the best signal. ( on my gamming rig I use the PCE-AC68 PCI-E ADAPTER)
3. Disable firewall on the router.
4 Enable QOS, I have used both adaptive and traditional, and they worked perfect for a few days.


Other than that, thats the only changes I make to this router, Like I said I use it for the great range it has, I have a decent sized house.

I will update how the Asus fw works, I did not try the newiest fw from merlin cause I wanted to see how stable it was. I returned the ac68p because all the issues it has and I could not get QOS to work right on it, for some reason.

Why do you disable the firewall (NAT on the router, correct)?

Have you tried without QoS?

Yes I did man, could not get the QOS to work, and then with that FW they released it caused more issues????

I disable the Firewall because of gaming, steam,psn, I read some where awhile ago that might cause issues, but I guess I am wrong.

With the QOS I did disable that too and it was not working also.

I just flashed it with the Asus 3.0.0.4.376.2769 FW, its stable getting my regular speeds on both 2.4/5g wifi singnals, 324 down 22 up.

Gonna enable adaptive QOS and see how it works now.

Keep the firewall enabled. The only time someone might want it disabled is if they were in an unusual network topology (for example simply routing two internal network segments perhaps).

Try disabling NAT acceleration under LAN -> Switch Control. In the past there's been a few ISPs that had trouble dealing with this enabled, leading to reboots.

Also check your power source. I remember one forum user who resolved a similar issue to yours by replacing his old powerbar.

Will keep firewall enabled for now on Mr. Merlin, thanks for the tip.

I have Time Warner internet, will try that too.

I have 2 week old new power strips so I think i am good to go there.

So enabled QOS and everything seems stable, I did not disable the nat like Mr. merlin advised wanted to try out like this to see if that could be it.

Left firewall enabled, I am using the adaptive QOS and here is the speedtest.

Just a fyi, just because a part like the power strip you have is only a few weeks old, don't rule it out as a source of problems.

I hear you man, but since I downloaded the ASUS fw, the router has been working with no issues. Hopefully it keeps up.

So after 3 days of uploading the Asus FW 376.2769, everything is working great with the router. No reboots, 2.4 & 5g signal are stable, no loss at all.

The one issue I did notice was that the adaptive QOS was causing some issue when I was playing on line with my ps4, kinda werid? I would get alot of lag and rubberbanding in bf4, I thought at first that it could be the game it self, but it was not. I set up the adaptive qos the right way, as soon as I disabled the QOS, everything went back to normal, works fine now and I am not using the QOS.

What I want to know and see if you guys can help me out, on my 2.4 and 5GHz wireless signals it shows under wifi status 5Ghz speed 1.3 Gbps and 2.4Ghz 600 Gbps.

Dont know if that is the actual speeds that I download stuff, but how would I check to see what speeds I am getting, sorry for the NOOB question but I have learned alot by reading theses forums and your guys opinions.

Start a download of the biggest file you can find on those sites. Note the MB/s speeds and multiply by 8 to get the Mbps rate and see how closely it matches your ISP's.

Keep trying until you find a site that is giving you the full download your connection can handle. This can vary by the file selected for download, the time of day and / or the server you get bounced to if you are not allowed to select a server yourself.
