Help Buying A NAS Synology DS412+ or?

gtlifter

New Around Here
Hi,
Sorry I'm a bit new here but my knowledge on NAS's are limited. What I do know is I have a Patriot Memory Javalin s4 that is a total peace of junk. What I am looking for is a 4 bay NAS that supports 12TB to 16TB. I love the specs on the Synology DS412+ but its the TOP end of the price range for a NAS Unit for at home. We've been remodeling the house so I ran cat7 to every room (yes its excessive but I got a 1000ft spool for free so i figured why not future proof it) I've got 7 TV's with Network Media Players attached and ive got 100mbit internet connection so I'm looking for something that can supply full retail bluray steaming to multiple TV's while I upload files to it from the home computer and possibly pull stuff from online to it directly without struggling. The Synology DS412+ looks like its built up to the task but if anyone has other NAS's for the price or a lower price I'm open so suggestions?

Thanks,
M

With my limited knowledge, here's what I know for sure...

* I have a 1512+, with LAG enabled, set up in raid 5.

* The bonded link from the Synology goes to a managed switch that also has LAG enabled...making bonded ports on both ends. This was how I was told to set it up, to take advantage of any potential speed benefit of dual LAN.

* I stream movies on my internal LAN, and serve them out to a friends house occasionally, never a stutter or quality hiccup.

I would like to stress, that the Synology boxes are VERY picky about what drives go in them. Make sure you are getting drives that are on the tested list, and make sure the drives are using the right/latest firmware.

Also, you likely know that you'll need a backup solution, Raid5 is not a backup or strong data protection.

YMMV.

Thanks for the info. I found a way to backup my data. I also looked up my drives and they are supported. What switch are you running? I'm wondering if i need a layer 2 or layer 3 for the LAG and bonded ports? I really like that 1512+ model you have but its simply not in my budget right now and I've got to replace this current NAS. At this point all its good for is a paper weight.

You might want to consider RAID10 as well as RAID5. There pros and cons to both with a 4 drive setup. Also check the processor power for your RAID5 system. You need a good processor for fast RAID5 performance. I run RAID5 but I run a 6 drive setup.

My switch is the Netgear GS108T managed or 'smart' switch, works great for me. Also, Tim did a great series based on it with excellent tutorials. Switch has been in play for 8 months, and hasn't been touched since the day I set it up. Rock solid.

Okay thanks. Only thing is I'll need a 10 or 16 port switch. My 8 is full already.
