New Around Here
I'm trying to figure out the best NAS to meet my needs (or if a NAS would be inadequate).
First off, I work in IT so I can handle some complexity but normally I'm so tired of "resolving issues" from my day job that I have no desire to come home and spend time tinkering, searching forums to resolve issues, etc. I would love to just get something, spend a minimal amount of time configuring it, and having it just work. I have some experience with Synology products and really liked them so right now my default solution is a Synology NAS unless there's a good reason to go with something else.
My requirements are as follows:
-Must be able to store & stream up to 2 TB of media (movies in .mkv format, pictures, etc.) to simultaneous devices in the house (such as a Roku).
-Must maintain a backup of the 2 TB of media on a separate drive in case of drive failure or data loss.
-Must be able to record and store surveillance camera footage from 2 to 5 IP cameras (1 TB of storage space should be enough, no backup or redundancy needed).
Questions:
1. Is 1 NAS, such as the Synology DS214Play with 2x4TB hard drives going to be able to handle the load from potentially streaming to 2 devices plus serving as a DVR for the cameras, or should I just get something separate for the camera recordings, or do I need to consider a server?
2. I assume I'd want the DS214Play for the transcoding abilities via the DSVideo application. Or is the play not needed?
