Help with Sprint hotspot USB tether

evanlan

New Around Here
I’m running RT-AC87U_380.62_1 on an RT-AC87U, and I’m trying to set it up to use USB as primary WAN with a Sprint Netgear (Sierra) 779S hotspot. It recognizes the hotspot, and I get a “SIM card is ready” message, but I can’t get it connected. I’ve tried the automatic setting, and various manual settings. I know that I could probably do a wireless bridge, but I’d prefer the USB tether.

This is one of the Calyx hotspots. I would be happy to buy a simpler USB dongle and swap the SIM, but I don’t know if that would cause problems with the “account,” which of course is not really in my control.

I’m trying to set this up for my parents, who live in the sticks, and I’ve had them set up on various Cradlepoints with a handful of different Sprint and Verizon sticks over the years. This is the first time I’ve tried to use something other than Cradlepoint (looks like they don’t have any AC stuff anyway), and the first time I’ve tried to tether a hotspot instead of just using a stick.

As an alternative, if anyone has any ideas on a WNDR3700v1 running ROOter GoldenOrb, I’d welcome those as well. It’s only N, but if I can get it to work, I’ll call it good.

Thanks in advance!
