UPnP Failed: Rejected by UPnP Device

Hello Everyone! I was using a Cisco SA520SW firewall/router for the past 4 years. Nothing wrong with it, but the wireless range is not that far.

I just purchased a RT-AC66U.

Everything set up, installed latest firmware. Range is awesome. Problem I am having is the following:

When transferring files between computers on the network, it is EXTREMELY slow. (I never had this problem with the cisco).

My wireless security IP camera says UPNP. The camera says: UPnP Failed: Rejected by UPnP Device, Maybe Port Conflict (I never had this problem before)

I installed Merlin's firmware but no difference.

Any help would be appreciated!

Cables?

For the first problem (slow wired transfers)...

Make sure you are using cat5e or cat6 cables. Assuming one or more of your machines are gigabit capable, using Cat5 cables will cause unstable / slow connections on the 66's gigabit ports. (Those same cables would have worked fine with your sa520's 10/100 ports, because only 10/100 connections would have been negotiated even by gigabit-capable machines). Also, I recommend shutting down all machines (wired and wireless), rebooting the router, then bringing up all the machines.

For the upnp error...

What port is the camera using? It is possible the port it uses is reserved (not forwardable) on the Asus. Try changing the camera's port(s) to a higher value. At a minimum, use a port greater than 1024. But I actually recommend something in the 15000-15999 range.

By default Asuswrt rejects uPNP requests on ports below 1024 (since these ports are usually system ports - applications are supposed to use ports in the 1024-65535 range).

If for some reason your camera insists on forwarding a port below 1024, then you can tell the firmware to allow it. Run the following through telnet/ssh (or on the Run CMD page):

Code:
nvram set upnp_min_port_int=1
nvram commit

Then reboot the router.

Hello, I am sorry, I should of been more specific. My entire network is wireless. No cables at all. So transferring files wireless, or even viewing pictures wireless on another computer is extremely slow. With the Cisco, it was always fast.

As far as the ports, THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate both of your help!

Do I enter each line above, one at a time and hit refresh for each?

I may be not the right person to help you, but I can tell you that your post gives no details about the actual wireless setup: frequency, Channel bandwidth, etc. Without these, it could be difficult to chat about this situation.

Ok, I put each line in and hit enter, rebooted the router and it works now as far as the camera. I am not sure on how to change the camera ports.

If I figure out how to change the camera ports, what commands do I enter to put the ASUS back the way it was?

Thank you so much for all your help. It is really appreciated.

2.4ghz - I have tried auto channel, or even trying every channel static.

Keep in mind, I didn't have any issues with speed between the computers with the SA520, it was just range I was having an issue with.

The Asus range is amazing, double the Cisco. Internet speed on the Asus at all computers is very fast. Just when you try to view pictures on another computer, or move/transfer files.

You can safely leave it the way it is. It's mostly for the security purists that ports below 1024 are rejected by miniupnpd. But if you ever want to put it back to the old value, set it to 1024 instead of 1.

Hi Merlin, Any idea on slow speeds between computers over wireless?

Could you be more specific?
- Link speed as per MS link details under load (not idle) for each PC.
- Transfer speed, using a large file between computers and using MS transfer details.
- Approx distance betwen router and each PC (and any obsticales).
- Using INSSIDER, measued near each PC as well as router any relevant devices on the same or neighbouring channels?

Also recommended, force it to use Single Channel (20 MHz). Dual channel is really only working well in "clean' environments/short distances
If there is interference and/or longer distances involved you are better of with single channel.
There is an article here on the site regarding this as well.

Nothing particular. Look at the usual suggestions posted in many places on the forums as to how to troubleshoot wireless performance issues. Without any additional information it's impossible to tell.

Does the MW power adjustment really work? It is default at 80mw, but when I change it to 200, nothing happens as far as signal strength?

I saw somewhere else that some others @country parameters@ restrain the possibility of increasing the power over the limits fixed by the country. This is by legislation. I don't think that the official firmware releases, neither Merlin's one will allow that.

Merlin, is there any way to bypass the limits on MW output?
This was already asked serveral times!

The answer is always the same: Country regulations are not touched!
The only way is to switch your country/region to something "better" (e.g. US or Canada). Search for "wl0_country_code" in the forum and you will find your way...

But: What does more power from the router help?
If the router signal is weak your mobile device signal will be even weaker!
So you will maybe get the router signal extended, but not the signal back from your WLAN enabled device!

With kind regards
Joe

PS.: MW means MegaWatt (1,000,000 Watt) - Wow! A whole power plant needed to generate MW!
The right unit is mW (0.001 Watt) - Which means MiliWatt! Much better, remeber the your Microwave Oven may have 700 Watt only to heat your meals...
