New Around Here
I have a 413 with 4x 3TB WD reds in SHR1 and it's very quiet (no clicking, chirping, clunking) but I'm only seeing 85 read and 65 write. Looking to add an 1815+ w/ 8 drives in RAID 10 and trying to decide between 6TB WD red or HGST NAS drives. The 1815+ will be media storage in a home environment, located under a TV.
I have an N66U with latest Merlin firmware, HP 1810-8G switch, 2x Windows 7 computers with SSD's and onboard Intel network adapters, and the DS413. Everything is running jumbo frames with CAT6 cables. On the Intel adapters, I disabled Large Send Offloads, disabled Interrupt Moderation Rate, and maximized the receive/transmit caches.
Does anyone have any experience with multiple HGST NAS drives in a home NAS? The extra platter and higher spindle speed worries me. Are they noisy at 10 feet away?
Someone posted youtube videos of their HGST drive but don't know if this is typical for all of them:
Also will 8 reds in RAID 10 saturate a gigabit network?
