Wow! Holy #%^#%$!!! Do you guys realize that a small 1 inch ad is just as or MORE effective than blasting things in my face? Come on, AD revenue is NOT a prob for a big site like you - having 3-4 gigantic ADs on each page is crazy - I'm more likely to HATE a product that pops in my face than buy it! Smaller sites do well with ONE AD so no reason other than greed for you. Then heaven forbit I "mouse over" something on accident - big whopping popup ... and even VIDEO ... wow - never thought one text artice I want to read would consume many MB of bandwidth. I can't even open your page via Terminal Server because my whole session locks.

Really sad to see this happen on what was a great site...

Thanks for your feedback.

Contrary to what you may think, ad revenue does not come rolling in, especially given market conditions these days. I was trying the auto-expanding ads as an experiment and, yes, to bring in more revenue.

If greed were what motivated me, I would not be trying to make a living this way, believe me.

I would love to see the "Smaller sites [that] do well with ONE AD".

Again, thanks for taking the time to comment. Anyone else have any thoughts about the ads?

On a scale of obtrusiveness, from Google Adwords (minor, and slightly humorous when the wrong keyword is used) to interstitial/site redirects (which I absolutely despise), I switch Ad Block Plus on when seizure-inducing or audio default:eek:n ads are in rotation. Although this site has more ads than the norm, they aren't really obnoxious.

Spyware Blaster, Ad block Plus and Ad Block element.. forums have to make money, server and run and keep..

Really? Can you give me the sites that represent "the norm"?
I really didn't think that SNB has that many ads.

Sure. By norm, I mean sites I visit on a regular basis: ArsTechnica, Slashdot, and The Tech Report.

The ad count includes Intellitxt ads, which out of this group are only in use here.

Thanks, jdabbs for the info. I also dislike interstitials and won't use them.
The intellitxt ads can be annoying, but provide needed revenue.

You have some flash ad on this site had confused one of my laptops with firefox, but I've fixed the the issue. Do not use Flashblock for Firefox.
