You give us so little contextual info, it's impossible to answer. What particular router is this? Does it provide you with a shell access? Is that particular device using an encrypted partition? Does it provide you with an internal serial header?

There's no generic answer to your question, it depends on the particular router you are talking about.

1 - It's Linksys WRT1900.
2 - It does provide shell access.
3 - not that i know of
4 - don't know  beyond my understanding

What firmware are you trying to load?

The stock firmware for the WRT1900AC is an IMG file, not TRX.

What i meant to say is extracting a fw regardless of the extension

just giving an example such as TRX

Are you meaning extract from the router? Or extract the archive that manufacturers usually put it in from their website so you can flash a new firmware?

AFAIK the WRT1900AC does not provide any shell access. Also, its serial port is read-only, so you cannot use it to log inside the router and do a flash dump to a file.

You might be able to do a dump while in uboot, using the serial port (it only becomes read-only while in the firmware environment), however I don't know if uboot lets you dump the content of a partition to a file.

Otherwise, the only way to "extract" the firmware would be to see if a tool such as FMK is able to extract the contain of an upgrade file.

Correct on all counts. Not a lot of flexibility with the WRT.

It would be good to know precisely what the OP is trying to accomplish from a practical standpoint. That would make giving a technical answer much easier.

Many firmware packages are either binary directly - or they are zip'ed up...

There are tools out there that can chase down binaries - once you get them unpacked...

This isn't the right place to discuss this...
