How can you monitor traffic usage for each internal client ?

I'm looking for a way to determine the total amount of traffic each client generates through the router over X period of time.

I don't want to use the Trend Micro Traffic Analyzer.

Is there an Entware-NG app that does that ?

Did you look into the standard Traffic Analyzer?
Under Menu Tools / Other Settings you can use "Enable IPTraffic (per IP monitoring)"... :rolleyes:

Not sure if it catches all traffic as the hardware acceleration bypasses the CPU and might not be shown - but still you can give it a try! ;)

@joegreat,

I didn't want to use the WebGUI\Traffic Analyzer since it's made by Trend Micro and you have to agree to their separate license agreement.

As far as enabling WebGUI\Tools\Other Settings\Enable IPTraffic, where do you view the data ? Is it under WebGUI\Traffic Analyzer\Traffic Monitor ?

Under Traffic monitor and then click the drop down menu to the right where it says Real-time.

IPTraffic disables NAT acceleration.

So is there an Entware-NG package that would do this ?

I'm just trying to find out which devices are using up the data plan the fastest.

People already gave you the answer - IPTraffic.

As you mentioned, IPTraffic disables NAT acceleration which makes it an undesirable option for long term usage.

To be more clear, I'm looking for a traffic monitor that can keep a running total per MAC address or hostname that doesn't greatly impact performance.

Perhaps darkstat.

You won't have much choice around that, as NAT acceleration bypasses parts of iptables. Otherwise, I would have made IPTraffic work alongside it.

@RMerlin,

How does NAT acceleration bypass parts of iptables ? Is it allowing traffic that might otherwise be blocked with iptables ?

What does NAT acceleration do ?

My takeaway is enabling NAT acceleration is weakening netfilter security if it's bypassing iptables rules on the FORWARD chain.

If that's the case, I'll disable NAT acceleration and enable IPTraffic.
