How can I configure my laptop to stop switching off the 6 ghz band? When I leave or put my computer to sleep and come back, it is on the 5ghz band and not the 6 ghz band. I have the default configuration enabled for Smart Connect rule but I want to know what I should change so it makes my laptop switch to 6 ghz more often.

For reference, when I have the problem, I use my laptop when the 6 ghz band is at -64 dbm and the 5ghz Band is at -48dbm. I still want to use the 6 ghz band despite that. I also have 6ghz preference set in device manager as well.

Disable Smart Connect, define separate SSIDs, and connect the client to the preferred SSID. Know that a 6GHz connection will weaken more rapidly at distance... not the best for roaming.

Yea thought about that but my phones and other devices are terrible at roaming and get stuck at the 2.4ghz band. Odd as my previous router the RT-AX58U did a pretty decent job at forcing devices to roam to 2.4ghz and the 5ghz band but it seems like my new one is just a wee bit off to my liking.

The issue was your laptop not liking 6GHz and you wanting to keep it there. My guess is that your laptop prefers a better 5GHz connection... this is more likely farther from the AP since 6GHz does not travel as well as 5 and 2.4GHz. Monitor client connection in the router Wireless Log to see how well they are connecting at various distances.

I don’t think that’s the case because I have it in device manager settings in windows to prioritize 6ghz so I’m pretty certain it’s the router. When I disconnect and reconnect my laptop it goes to the 6ghz band so I’m pretty sure it’s the router.

Another WIFI 7 beta tester. Go back to the WIFI defaults and let the clients and router choose what works best for them.
