Am having trouble setting up to access my NAS drive remotely when am
away from home. I have a Synology DS112J and Asus RT66N router.
I have no trouble accessing my NAS drive via my home network.

Ive tried setting it up from EZ Internet on DSM software (latest version)
but doesnt complete fully. It then says i need to set up manually from
router manual booklet ?

Can anyone advise me on this ?

Your Synology's DSM can uses UPnP to auto-config your router to allow NAS access via the web. But most sage advise is to disable UPnP on the router for sercurity reasons. All that UPnP does is simplify configuring your router's port-forwarding capability.

Best is to get someone who understands router port forwarding setup to help you with the router. For geeks like us, it's a 1 minute thing. Maybe Synology has a web page on how to do this. Call their (US?) tech support and ask if there's such a guide for non-geeks.

Also, this setup should enable Synology's free "dynamic domain name server" (DDNS) capability - where your NAS is setup to tell Synology's DDNS service the internet/public IP address of your connectivity (done by your router and modem (DSL, Cable, FIOS). Setting this up is also well know by geeks like us.
If you have AT&T U-Verse or DSL, it may be you cannot access your NAS remotely due to AT&T's policies.

You can arrange it to provide access via your web browser when outside your home/site where the NAS is.

Better is to install Synology's free programs for PC, Android devices/phones, Apple too. Using those is a better user interface experience.

Ive managed to set it up now from EZ internet. I had to disable the firewall on my router first. Once set up it also set me up with a synology.me id (not sure why i need this) ?

I can remotely via http://quickconnect.to/_______ to access files.

Also what are synology free programs ? are you referring to DS files app etc ?

I would not leave it like this long term. You are asking for a hacked NAS and possibly hacked network.

Yes, I don't allow port 80 access to my Synology NAS from the Internet; Too risky. You might be safe allowing the synology client software for smart phones and PCs to access the NAS via the internet... these don't use port 80 and have special protocols and authentication.

Ive enabled my firewall now for router.

i set up an guest account so that i can have friends access my movie and music folder on read only access.

I give them my http://quickconnect.to/ to access

what is the purpose of a synology.me id ?
