How to backup the DOM on the x86 base QNAP's

I was thinking about just booting of a Linux usb stick and
dd if=/dev/$DEV of=/backup.img bs=1K

Anyone used dd to to restore there DOM before?

Did you manage to make the backup? I was able to write a freenas distro to my qnap 639 using dd, but couldn`t find a way to do the same with qnap firmware.
