How to configure router

Hi all :)

It seems that I'm cursed... every time I fix a thing, something else stop working, so there must be always something wrong in my system

When I had the old router, a D-Link 655, everything worked perfectly until the router decided to give up and started to get random disconnections, so I purchased a new router, the TP-Link TL-R600VPN.

The router itself seems good, but I still got random disconnections, so I also changed the modem, installing a TP-Link TD-8616 (the old modem was a Linksys AM200).

So far so good, I get no more disconnections, but now I have another problem. One of the software I was using regularly with the old modem/router configuration now crashes randomly.

The software is Internet Download Manager (IDM for short). I already asked tech support to fix the problem, but they seems able only to blame any security software that can be installed in computer.

Before this problem started, I changed nothing in my operative system, I changed no configuration, I installed nothing, and IDM was working perfectly.

The only thing that actually changed is the modem/router. It seems that there is something that causes IDM to crash.

The only answer I got from tech support was the following:

If IDM uses a lot of CPU it means that there is a conflict with some other application that tries to control all traffic and disc activity.

So, according to them the only solution is to disable or even uninstall any security software in the computer... That's simply insane, a software that can run only without a firewall is completely useless.

Moreover, if the firewall really causes conflicts, why IDM doesn't crash immediately but only after a random amount of time? Sometimes it crashes after few minutes, sometimes after few hours. Both windows firewall and router firewall are running when I start IDM, so if what they say is true, these "application that tries to control all traffic and disc activity" are already there and should intervene immediately after I run IDM.

However, before to say goodbye to money I paid for this software, I'd like to make some tests. Of course, I want to keep the firewall running, but I wonder if there is some way to configure it to avoid conflicts with IDM.

As I already said, there is nothing different in that computer except for the modem/router, so I think that installed software can be excluded as cause. Is it possible that is indeed one of the already installed software to be incompatible with the router? There is anything I should check or configure better?

Some more information if needed:

operative system --> Windows Server 2008 standard
firewall --> the default firewall included in win server, I installed nothing
other software installed --> nothing! in that machine there is only operative system, mainboard drivers, and IDM, nothing else.

Anyone have suggestions? If it can be useful, the user manual is freely available here

I checked settings many time, but the web interface is quite simple, and I can't change many parameters. I have no idea what to check or what parameters must be changed. Any help is welcome.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi,

I'm still trying to figure out what can be the cause of malfunctioning, and is clear that the software is not the culprit.

I asked tech support to send me an old version of software (the one I had before these problems started), but it is crashing too. Since when I installed the new router, the connection seems more stable (i.e. I get no more disconnections) but the computer is not working anymore as usual.

I tried a different download manager (JDownloader), and it is even worst than IDM, because it lose the connection every few minutes. As a result, the downloaded files are corrupt (to get a 200 MB rar archive it required more than 1 hour, and then the archive was unreadable). The same file grabbed with IDM was completed in about 20 minutes (yes, I know, my ISP sux) but the archive was integer.

So, I'm pretty confused. What happened since when I installed the new router? Is it possible that a misconfiguration can cause all of this?

Could it be the router to be damaged??

That's definitely weird... with the old router I got a lot of disconnections, with the new router the software is not working...

Do I need an exorcist?

If the downloader programs are opening a lot of simultaneous connections, the new modem and/or router might not support as many as the DIR-655.

You can test this by connecting your computer directly to the modem and seeing if the problem goes away.
