Hello everyone,
Made a post on the LAN & WAN section asking about my cabling but I wanted to ask this question too.

My router is downstairs and my laptop is upstairs as well as my mothers iMac and laptop. Most of the time I want to game but often run into ping spikes and when downloading I get half of what I would get downstairs. I tried a netgear wifi extender however that barely worked gave me even worse ping spikes. Streaming videos on our phones sometimes get laggy as well. Upstairs nothing uses 5ghz because it barely reaches, only some spots is fine like where my mom has her imac and laptop, her macbook sometimes is connected to 5ghz and is fine but where I am (not that far room next to her) 5ghz is 1 bar for me. 2Ghz should reach us but gives half the performance of what 2ghz would give downstairs. I am not looking for the exact performance but just want a way to improve gaming upstairs.

What is the router /AP combo you are using ?

if you have any RG6 coax between the two areas, you can use a pair of MOCA2 modems + an AC access point to get full speed upstairs on 5 Ghz. Even RG59 coax with MOCA1.1 would be an improvement. RG59 was used for analog cable tv. RG6 is used for the current digital cable tv systems and satellite (dish) tv systems.

Otherwise, you are looking at powerline technology + an AC access point
or have you tried repositioning the router/AP ? perhaps put it on a wall rather than flat on surface ?
It depends on what you are using for a router/AP.
How is the floor constructed ?
