Background: I used GParted to format a hard disk into 3 ext3 primary partitions (with an msdos partition table), then connected it the RT-AC3200 router. (It's running asuswrt-merlin 378.54_2.)
After using the router's web UI to enable Network Place (Samba) Share and create 2 user accounts, I wrangled with setting up shared folders to eventually discover that:

- Access permissions settings only "stick" on the first partition. On other partitions, "Save Permissions" reloads the page and discards the settings.
- Those accounts can't connect to the server. Only the router's admin account works.
