Gettting secure access to your network when you're away is easy when you have the right stuff.

Read on SmallNetBuilder

OpenVPN has come a long way, from being this cryptic, complicated setup, to the "just enable, export, and import the config file on your clients". Good timing, as this change occurred right as PPTP was found to be cryptographicly broken. It might not offer the best performance, but since most people are limited by their upstream speed, it's quite often fast enough for remote access.

FWIW - Apple has pulled PPTP support from the latest OSX/iOS betas - they've been warning about this for a while now...

They still support natively L2TP/IPSec, which works very nicely, but L2TP might run into problems when roaming - as there's a number of ports to work thru, and unlike OpenVPN, you need to have those ports - but if it work, it's pretty much wired fast...

OpenVPN is secure, very secure, it's just slow - and most of that is due to design requirements (e.g. portable across many OS's) and it's a bit cumbersome to get sorted moving certs around...
