That's what I did (I will correct thre first post).The RT-AC56U can be a bit tricky, as I think it "fakes" the 5 GHz LED through special firmware code.
Note that the 5 GHz interface is eth2, not eth1.
this seems to do the trick:
led_ctrl 8 0
