I Reduced My CPU Temps By Over 20 Degrees

I have two AC68U's on my network running Merlin's Asuswrt. One is setup as a main router and the other is setup as an access point which is wired in. The main router was running at 83 -84 degrees and the access point was running at about 78 degrees. Neither is overclocked. I bought two little usb powered fans from Micro Center for $7.99 each and set them up behind the AC68U's and was amazed that the CPU temps dropped by over 20 degrees. They are now running at 61 and 57 degrees respectively. Both fans are being powered by 1.0 amp cell phone usb chargers.

Those temps are normal but cooling them sure cant hurt. I wonder over the course of time though if those fans will blow so much dust and dirt into the router that in the long run it may make things worse. Just a thought. Good Luck !!

So temp less than 70 degree is safe?

ASUS RT-AC66U F/W: 374.41

From what i understand the CPU temp can be over 80 and still be ok. As far as the radio temps i am not sure but mine never go over the mid 50's

Right I'm concern now... On 374.39 I get 52 on 2.4ghz and 58 on 5ghz

And on 374.41 I get 55 on 2.4ghz and 60 on 5ghz...

I feel like I should revert back to 374.39

I just checked now I think it back to normal

Every AC68u around the world has its CPU running at around 80C, I wish the temp monitoring feature was never added. Careful design goes into cooling on these routers. When you see smoke coming from the back of your router consider investing in a fan, otherwise your fine.

Hi,
Air has to move(i.e. convection) around the cpu/heat sink for improved cooling. And cold
cpu will run faster(at least on theory)

Thats true Tony but i was just saying adding a fan can also add dust and dirt to the heat sinks and over the course of time the dust and dirt can hamper the cooling affect of the heat sinks and increase temps. For me i just dont worry about it Asus has tested these devices (I Hope) and has determined that a fan is not needed in the normal house environment.

You can get an air duster and clean it out every couple of weeks. Witch you should be doing anyway.

Cold CPUs run faster only if overclocked.
If you keep the same clock a cold CPU is not faster than a hot CPU.
It could be more stable and last longer, but not faster..
