New Around Here
Hey all,

I work in postproduction sound as an engineer and tech specialist, I'm about to implement a gigabit network between all the editorial rigs and workstations at our facility. We run both Mac and PC for two different DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations).

Our primary use for a NAS is where our SFX database will be housed. This means at any given time, a bin of roughly 200-500mb worth of files will be xferred from the NAS to the station when pulling in SFX. We need speed in this department. Secondly, it will be used to easily xfer files from station to station. Lastly, it will be used to backup current projects and provide a lifeline. At any given time only 4 stations will be accessing this drive, we do not intend to stream from it - only transfer from NAS to station. Since there aren't a ton of users I'm not suggesting a full blown server.

Requirements:

4-5 bay storage
gigabit speed
good read/write rates
$900 or less budget with drives

Candidates from my readings:

My initial choice was a LaCie 5big 5TB NAS due to price and included drives at 5tb! But reviews on this are sparse and subpar.
Synology DS409 (not the +) +4 1tb barracudas
QNAP TS-439 +4 1tb barracudas
D-Link DNS-343 +4 1tb barracudas (I have since read huge issues with this product)

Appreciate any opinions on our setup.

Thanks!

Rich
