IPv6 on LAN only

Jack Yaz

Part of the Furniture
Sorry if this is a stupid question...I want to learn more about IPv6, but unfortunately Virgin Media (UK ISP) are dragging behind and still do not support it.

That aside, is there a way I can use IPv6 locally to learn about it, while still using IPv4 online?

If you have IPv6 enabled devices on your LAN then they're probably already using IPv6 via their link-local address (begins with fe80:: ).

Beyond that IPv6 only really has a purpose when connecting clients to the internet. For that you could create a free account with Hurricane Electric and get a 6in4 tunnel. You can then set it up on the router. That's what I did and I'm with Virgin Media as well.

Be aware though, by default Windows (and probably other) clients will prefer to use IPv6. Because IPv6 traffic is being routed via a third party it will be a lot slower than the IPv4 connection.
