Hi all -- long time lurker, first time poster.
We replaced our ASUS RT-N66U with an RT-AC68U last week. Not a lot of huge improvements (at least the way we use it here at home) but there are enough things that add up for noticeably better performance and an improved router administration experience.
The RT-AC68U is running stock ASUS firmware version 3.0.0.4.380.4118. Looks like ASUS never officially released this version on their firmware site. At least I can’t find it on their firmware pages and other posts here seem to support this. Some claim to have gotten this version using the web GUI upgrade process (or something like that). No problems noted so far on 4118, just the flashing exclamation point indicating there is a newer version of firmware available (3.0.0.4.380.4164).
Question – should I go ahead and upgrade to 3.0.0.4.380.4164 (no Facebook stuff), stay with 4118, or go back to 3.0.0.4.380.3831?
Looks like the security improvements and bug fixes in version 4164 might be worth it. But it could be a trade off considering that others report that ping, traceroute and nslookup do not work on the new 4164 version. They all work perfectly on the network tools page in version 4118. Maybe we should just stay with 4118 and wait for the next version after 4164 and hope ASUS fixes these bugs.
If I do upgrade will I need to restore to factory default settings? Not a lot of information to re-enter but enough to make the upgrade kind of a pain if it’s needed. Yes, I know a reset is good practice, but just wondering if it’s required for this upgrade
It’s hard to decide about this upgrade since I have not read much about it. Maybe no news is good news! I’m just looking for a stable version with reasonable security. Hopefully others will share more of their experiences with version 4164. Kind of a belt and suspenders type of person and really appreciate the experiences shared in this forum. Thanks.
