Is it possible to split backups betwewen multiple smaller externals??

I'm about to purchase a 2 bay Synology NAS sometime this week, but I'm wondering if backups (even manual ones) can be done across multiple externals. Being that I'll be using two x 3TB WD Reds, I was originally analyzing everything too much and driving myself crazy thinking that I needed to buy a two or four 3TB externals for backup depending on whether I use Raid 1 or two basic volumes (one onsite/one offsite). Most of what I'll be storing is media and not very important, but I'd still prefer not to lose any of it. So anyway, is backing up 3-6TB to four-six 2TB externals (already owned) something that can be done? From what I've read, it would seem this can't be done via Time Backup or auto backups, but that I can accomplish what I want by manually selecting folders to backup. Is this correct??


PS - I searched endlessly and efficiently via Google over the past two weeks, but didn't really find anything that was conclusive on the matter. Thanks in advance

yes.
Create backup jobs (manually run or by time/calendar).
Each job has a source folder and destination folder which could be an eternal drive.
Multiple backups, where you have to guesstimate which folders will fit on the eternal drive.

I see no way to "span" one backup across multiple external media, where that means USB or eSATA. So the above might be the only way.

Using, instead, rsync or some such, more elaborate methods can be used. But this requires an rsync host on the other end, that being another NAS or a PC.

Then there's Amazon S3 but transfer speeds via consumer ISP (Cable modem/DSL) is way too slow.

Thanks stevech!!! I am a happy camper knowing there is a solution, and I really don't mind sacrificing the time to do manual backups.


To be completely honest, I was really hoping I'd get a reply from you for a variety of reasons lol. First I've ran into a lot of your posts searching the internet, and I also plan to use your method of mirroring the second volume with very important things on volume one like documents and photos I cannot lose.
