So is Merlin's firmware worth it even thought you won't use the features? There's no performance hits or stability issues is there like DD-WRT and Tomato firmware cause? Thanks

Worth it times a 1,000,000,000. :)

He takes Asus' bedhead and makes your router a stunningly coiffed, electronic wonder.

Read the change log and decide for yourself.

Rmerlin's firmware is responsible for many of the improvements implemented in the Asus firmware, so whatever way you slice it this firmware has been a great win for all. Reliability and stability are not an issue.

The only possible down-side I can think of is that while you are running AsusWRT-merlin, if your router decides to eat your dog, RMerlin cannot be held legally responsible.

But if you were running stock AsusWRT and your router ate your dog, Asus would possibly be legally responsible, so you might be able to sue Asus and get money to rebuild your dog.

Thanks. I have Merlin RT-AC68U 380.57 and so far it's great no issues. A lot better than the NETGEAR R7000 firmware.

Can you help me with a couple of settings on the router I'm new to ASUS.

Q1. At the bottom where it says "Enable PPP Echo Detect" under WAN, http://prntscr.com/9njozm whats is that? It's not ASUS's version of "Dial on Demand" which NETGEAR has where the connection isn't always up is it? I want the connection to be always up and running.

Q2. I've set a static IP of 192.168.1.2 on my main PC was I right in changing the DHCP start to 192.168.1.3?

Q3. Are these the correct DST dates and times for London, http://prntscr.com/9njry4

Thanks again

Those DST dates and times look good: identical to mine (in Manchester [UK]).

I know that living in the grim north sometimes feels like it is in a different era, but Mancs still follow the law of the land....don't they? :p

"Grim" doesn't do it justice this winter: this forum is life-saving escapism. That said, I'll take it anyday to London and its endless, noisy, traffic-infested suburbs. You have my condolences. I expect several people, like me, have now had their bubble burst: I always associated the name Martineau with someone tapping away on his tablet, feet up in the south of France overlooking the Med, G&T in the other hand.

i like rt merlin a lot.

the only downside for me is that it does not by default in the UI have a setting to use CIFS for storing logs.

It however is possible to do so using scripts ..... but alternatives like Shibby already incorporates this option into the firmware UI by default without having to do hacks that most users find hard to do.

Same thing for dnscrypt, no native in ui, but can add on via script commands round about method.

other than this, merlin retains the original asus features.
