Is my Asus RT-AX86 Pro dead after 1 month?

Hi all,

I hope someone can help.

I purchased an Asus RT-AX86 Pro from Amazon AU on 3rd December. It has been working fine, and I had it set up as an AiMesh node. However, this morning, after 1 month of use, it stopped working.

I disconnected it and tried performing a hard reset using the reset button several times throughout the day, but without success. I also disconnected it from the mains in between attempts, but it still does nothing. The only LED that lights up is the white power LED, none of the others light up. I even tried the LED on/off button in case the lights were turned off, but that didn’t help either.

There haven’t been any power surges that I’m aware of, as the other two are working as they should. My NAS is also still running without issues. Unfortunately, I fear the router may have failed.

I’ve had several Asus routers in the past, including the RT-AC68U x 1, RT-AC86Ux 2, and now the RT-AX86 Pro x 3. They've all been rock solid and very stable, with none of them failing even after years of use.

Since I’ve never had to return anything before, I’m unsure of the process. Do I need to contact Amazon AU or Asus directly? All my routers are registered on the Asus website.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Be sure nothing else is connected to it that might be pulling it down.

If you have another power adapter, you could try that.

If you can still return it to the seller, you can try that.

Otherwise, reference the docs that came with the product, call ASUS Support for your region, and talk it through until they initiate an RMA, ideally at their expense since the unit is nearly DOA.

Hi thanks for your prompt reply. No nothing attached.

I will test with another power adaptor first. If that doesn't work. I will contact Amazon AU and see what they have to say.

I'll update tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Try a hard factory reset as a troubleshooting step if you haven't done so already.

1. Turn the router off.
2. Press and hold the WPS button and turn the router on.
3. Power light is on (keep holding the WPS button).
4. Release the WPS button after the power light is off.
5. Reboot your router by manually pressing the power button.

Hi bennor, thanks for your reply.

I've just tried the method you suggested. Watched the video too. Unfortunately, the power light remains on. I held the WPS button for much longer than was shown in the video. I guess something is failed in the internals. I will try again later.

Thank again for your input

It is looking like a major failure.
Amazon do usually deal with returns of such quick failures very well.
Get in touch with Amazon ASAP and get the return started.

Same here today with my AXE7800 , not responding at hard reset. My unit is a bit older but suddenly died.

Update.. I did this morning. Yes you're right. Amazon AU accepted a return and have already given me a refund for AUD$333 the cost of the unit. I promptly bought another to replace it.

They have the RT-AX86 Pro for AUD$299 so a bonus, Its the cheapest I've seen it.

Their returns system was super efficient using the Parcel Point Drop Off. All in all a good outcome.

Thanks for your good advice

Its frustrating. I feel your pain. Luckily mine was only 4 weeks old. Amazon AU accepted a return. The outcome is posted above. Hope you resolve yours. If you happen to get it going. Please update, thanks
