Is there a way to change the MAC address of a RT-AC68U?

The router is on 384.4 firmware. Want to change the MAC address of the router in order to get an IP address from ISP.

On the WAN page near the bottom. Clone mac address or you can enter a mac address of your choice.

What does "clone mac address" do? It generates a random one?
It clones the address of the device up stream of it I believe. You can clone your modems mac and then connect with out a modem.
EDIT: In some cases.

No, just copy the MAC from the device you are using to access the router.

I have copied my main PC MAC in order to change between the router and the PC without having to reboot the router when troubleshooting.

Were you trying to say that "It will" just copy the MAC from the device you are using to access the router.

That's what it does.

You can enter a MAC address in that field (that you can generate yourself), only caveat is that you don't want to generate one that is possibly running on the ISP's network. Assuming that the MAC address is correct, the router, with the recent firmware version will accept that address. If the address does not meet the requirements of the MAC address you will see a warning on the Internet Status section on the main page. I believe that's a DNS warning but, don't quote me on that one, or, the router's IP address will be missing. If you reboot the router with an incorrect MAC address, you will see a ISP DNS failure warning in the Internet Status section on the main page.

The previous 380.xx firmware versions would warn you immediately if the entered MAC address was incorrect or invalid. That warning has not been carried over to this firmware version. Too bad, but, at least now its possible to enter a MAC address directly into the field, you don't have to go thru the Mac Clone function to change the router's MAC address.
