New Around Here
I've a bunch of older NAS boxes @ home and data is scattered among them. Anyway, all my movies are on a WD my book live 1tb networked hard drive connected to a gigabit router. Last night, my wife was streaming a movie to a WDTV live+ over wifi-G speeds (I was directly connected to the gigabit router by cable and decided to copy some videos from my desktop to the WD my book live drive) and few minutes later her movie became choppy and unwatchable. I had to temporarily stop what I was doing so she could finish her movie.

Now, I understand that the WD live hard drive has one 1tb drive in it, so obviously the drive head got tired of juggling back and forth on the spindle. My question is, what kind of NAS out there will do this job well in a similar situation. Will a simple swtich to a 2-bay or 4-bay NAS solve the problem or Do I need to upgrade to a build an x86 based box.

I've used freenas/whs etc in the past but am trying to cut down on energy consumption, so I switched to low power nas enclosures. My WHS had no problem performing well in similar situations in the past but I'm hesitant to go to the desktop route again. thanks

See Can Your NAS Do Two Things At Once?

I suspect part of your problem could have been due to the high mismatch between the two data sinks (Gigabit vs. probably around 10 Mbps for the 11G wireless) and the fact you were copying large files.

Great article. It looks like I should be find with the NAS box, not sure how I'm supposed to tackle the wifi part. Part solution would be to run lan cable upstairs to the bedroom tv but I'm living in a rental house... it sux not being able to add ethernet cables to all rooms. Thank you.
