Hey all! For a while now I've been getting fairly large ping spikes in games when someone else opens up YouTube videos or something like that. For example I will be playing a game like Overwatch and my ping will be fine but as soon as someone loads a YouTube video on the wifi network my ping will jump up to around 1000 in-game, making it pretty much unplayable for a moment of time.

I understand that maybe it's normal to have these spikes as the video will use some bandwidth, but spikes up to 1k seems a bit odd. The ping also goes back to normal after a small period of time, once the YouTube video has loaded. Is there any way to lower the ping spikes? I have tried using QoS but no difference. I've checked the channels and I think I'm on the best one. Could it be that I'm using 5GHz by any chance?

I'm using a Asus RT-AC68U with Merlin firmware 380.64_2. Thanks for any advice!

You could use limiters to limit all non-gaming traffic to 90% so that 10% of your connection will be free for gaming. You might need to lower it below 90%.

If you want to know more about QoS in general read this.

Code:

Hehe...

FWIW - most consumer Router/AP's got this right out of the box...

Some folks worry too much about this stuff..

Have you tried Adaptive QoS? If I recall from my experience, you have to prioritize website traffic over video streaming as Battle.net traffic somehow is categorized as Web traffic instead of gaming. So you might want customize your QoS by putting Gaming on top, then Web surfing then video and audio streaming then all that are left below those three
