I have been having problems with my download going from 50+ to 9 MBS.
Every time it happened I would go through the motions,eg reset the modem and router and in extreme cases factory reset the router ( rt AC 88 U ) and eventually it will go back to 50+ MBS.
Yesterday however nothing worked so I unplugged and plugged the Ethernet cable back in(10 metres) from the modem and it worked for a while so I unplugged and plugged it back into the router and it worked and continued to work when I checked this morning before going to work 4 .30 am.
My question WTF is going on here?? the cable music be about 3 years old now but I am not sure if it's a dicky port on the router or the cable.
I know that the ports are a bit wonky because just picking the router up can upset it . Is there a way to rule the cable either in or out?

The cable itself is rarely the problem unless it's been abused, e.g. lying on the floor with an office chair rolling over it, or getting pinched between something. More often it is a problem with either the plug or the socket, usually the socket. Monitoring the state of the connection while wiggling the plug in the socket usually confirms this.

Try another cable.

Beware the upper four LAN ports known to die on the AC88U.

Ok thanks Colin I'll try that tonight.
PS the cable mainly sits under a cupboard and behind a bookshelf in the hallway but eventually a small amount of it does just sit on the floorboards and sneaks under the loungeroom door so not ideal I know , but I do have another cable coming so we will see

I googled 10 metre cables yesterday and discovered that we are up to cat 8 now so I purchased one whether I need it or not to replace the cat 7 one I am using now. I know way overkill as my plan is only 50 MBS but I thought why not. Future proof it.
I'm glad you mentioned the lan ports as I had heard that some ports die early but wasn't sure which ones.
By the upper 4 do you mean ports 5,6,7& 8?

Yes, 5-8, but suspect everything.

A CAT5e cable supports 1000 Gbps... plenty good unless the cat has been chewing on it. I would use any CAT5e cable laying around to test with. And visually inspect that the cable conductors are still bottomed out and crimped tight in the connectors.

I do have another 10 metre cable,I just realised, running from a lan port to a little tp Link I have in the bedroom for passthrough,Uno for local streaming so that would be really painless to try . I'll swap them out next time it happens and see how it goes thanks again.
PS I like what you did there with the cat chewing the cat cable

If the issue is connectivity somewhere, it may 'unhappen' when you go to swap the cable like it does now when you reboot. I would swap the cable now and if the issue was the cable, you won't see it again and you can safely assume you fixed it with the new cable... that's being proactive.

In my experience, it isn't usually a "cable" problem, but more oxidation on either the cable connectors or the jack pins.

I am going shopping ( online Of course) a bit later today,my war office says that I should have been born female cause I love shopping more than her. It doesn't matter what I just love shopping ☺️

Pick me up an RT-AX86U while you're at it! :)

I spray a bit into the cap and then use a Q-Tip or cloth to apply it.

I should add that I mostly use it to clean up after leaking batteries.
