Lockdown SmartTv access possible?

Jari

New Around Here
Hi
I'm completely new to this but have been reading for a while here trying to figure out if it it is possible to control what a SmartTv has access to on a network?
For example; if I can block the Tv's access to the shared files on LAN - I have a Kodi client for that, and limited access to internet - whitelist for Netflix or Youtube only? Probably overkill on privacy but like the idea for a starting foray. I'm also in the market for a new router and looking at the AC87U and thinking I will probably need to flash Merlin to do this.
Currently neck deep reading all the documentation/posts I can find - and may be in over my head

Thanks
J.

Hmmm.. in light of the Samsung issue, I'd rather just not let TV's have access to the internet at all...

OTT Set-top boxes tend to be more current...

Yeah it doesn't currently have internet access for that reason - and yes it is a Samsung...
Wouldn't mind being able restrict its internet reach though.
Can neither confirm nor deny pressure from the other half because Netflix app is easier to use on the TV o_O

Drop your consideration for the RT-AC87U. Many still have issues with it even as many others do not (do you want to bet you're in one camp or the other?).

The RT-AC68U or better should be your focus today and depending on your actual networking environment and requirements, an RT-AC56U may even be up to the tasks you need (both have similar capabilities (features) and processor prowess) and can save you a lot of money (can be found on sale for $50 or so).

Thanks L&LD. Down the road I would like to try my hand at using the VPN client side of thing, I thought the faster processor in the AC87U might handle the load better. I've read about some of the squirrely stuff the AC87U can do however the budget doesn't reach to the AC88U, 68U I might consider.

You're welcome.

Consider the RT-AC1900P also from bestbuy. Same processor as the newer Asus models but at a great price.

Only downside right now? RMerlin firmware is not available for this model (yet).

That actually looks pretty good. No idea when it would see the light of day in Australia & with currency exchange the AUD is worth about its weight in cardboard.
Can you block LAN and a whitelist for internet Netflix/Youtube using Merlin for the if I gave it a static ip? Or would I have to look at other options for that. Trying to this out before I drop some ̶c̶a̶r̶d̶b̶o̶a̶r̶d̶ money on anything.
Cheers

If your TV is connected to the router via Wi-Fi you can block its access to the LAN by settting "Set AP Isolated"*(Wireless - Professional) or disabling "Access Intranet" (Guest Network).

To limit where it can get to on the internet you can use the Network Services Filter.

* Probably best to create a separate guest network for the TV.

Trying to find out if the 1900P is likely to see Australian shores, until then seems I have some reading to do...
