Running a FreeNAS bos (on CF card), so far things look like it will be the way I will go. But since I know zero about Linux, I have a few questions.

The NORCO RPC-4220 also is running a LSI SAS 84016E card. I would like to install the MegaRaid Storage Manager software I DL from the LSI site. HOW?

I am assuming I will be better informed if I have a drive go bad?

Any help?

Thanks

I'm certainly no 'expert', but the current and past versions of FreeNAS are based off BSD, not Linux. That will probably figure into what software/hardware will or will not be usable/available...

I don't think the design intentions of FreeNAS include downloading and installing random extra software packages. There are some extra add-ons made available by developers, of course, but they are designed to interface with the existing framework. If you want to do other specialty stuff, its going to be non-trivial to say the least.

That said... is there something lacking in the S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring module that comes stock with FreeNAS? If you dig through it a bit you should find where you can configure it to email you if a drive starts acting up (high temperatures, etc.) as well as just sending you periodic status reports on a regular basis (daily, weekly, etc.)

HTH,

Monte

you shouldn't need to install any drivers. Just set the LSI card up t use the drives as JBOD and use ZFS to handle your "RAID" stuff. Freenas has SMART monitoring you have to configure it to email alerts, etc however ive found that that works just fine.
