Lose FTP share after 3 minutes

Long time viewer of this forum, but now with a problem with setting up FTP for use by my ip cameras. I'm running Merlin 3.0.0.4.374.39 on a RT-AC66U. After enabling FTP, I can reach it locally and from the internet, but only for the first 3 minutes, then it's not reachable. The ip camera is able to upload video and jpegs during this 3 minute window. Also can't access the ftp share by going to ftp://192.168.1.1.

To reactivate access, I have to go into the gui to disable and enable FTP, and then it works for another 3 minutes. I'm using the built-in feature in the Asus router setup, USB Application/AiDisk ..., to enable FTP share. When first enabled during the 3 minutes window that it works, I can reach my usb hard drives using either ftp://192.168.1.1 or ftp://xxx.asuscomm.com.

So after much experimentation and changing of hardware and settings, I discovered that the problem of the router losing its ftp server function occurs when the ip camera uploads a video (.mkv file). Uploading jpegs is no problem. The size of the video file is 2 - 10 mbs. Changing the size and resolution of the video file makes no difference.

I have to disable and reenable ftp in the router to restore its function. I've changed to another USB hard drive with no difference. I've uploaded multiple folders of mp3s without a hiccup from the ftp server. So far, it looks like the simple upload of a video file from the ip camera is what chokes the ftp server.

I can't figured this out or why it's happening.
