Thank goodness I did my research before buying a new NAS box.

I chose a Synology DS214-Play because it supports:-

  1. External USB Mac formatted drives
  2. Mac file permissions.

For anyone using a MAC I suggest you look into this before buying also. All the other bells are whistle features are useless if you can't have these two essentials.

The DS214-Play has an Intel dual core processor and so the CPU architecture supports the HFS+ discs.

Im also very happy with the DSM 5.0 OS - excellent feature set, fluid and easy to understand.

Was really surprised about the HFS+ support, but it is still read only.

Couldnt really find anything about file permissions except people complaining about problems, I do know they have worked fine for me.

I can't think of many reasons why supporting reading of HFS+ by the nas is a must, I copy my files over the network and use usb for nas backups (writing, HFS+ not supported). Besides I prefer to use ext3/4 for writing on Linux because it's quite proven, HFS+ support is not quite at the same level. Still, of course it's nice the support is there for those who find it useful (lot of other features I don't use either)

CPU architecture does not support things, it runs code which can generally be ported to any architecture. For example Synology's NAS devices with ARM processors also support HFS+ as do Macs that run on PowerPC processors. Even iphones and ipads run a case sensitive version of the same filesystem called HFSX

Im also very happy with the DSM 5.0 OS - excellent feature set, fluid and easy to understand.

Very much agree, just updated recently and it feels like a good improvement over 4.x
