New Around Here
I have a ASUS RT-AC66U running Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.374.32.

I have had no real issues with the router, until the last two days. I have bought home a Macbook Air from work and when connected to either the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands, after about 20 minutes the AC66u crashes and needs the powered cycled.

Any thoughts on this strange behaviour?

You're getting exact same behavior on both bands? Maybe try isolating one at a time, that would mean you should start by changing the SSID of the AP on each band, then go to keychain (in spotlight) remove anything with the AP or SSID name in it, go to network prefs, remove all saved networks. Maybe try with 2.4ghz band first and try to isolate what is happening when.

Your Mac has some pretty healthy diagnostics built into it (assuming you're on Mountain Lion, Lion also has it, just some cosmetic differences to the app). Here is an article on how to use the diagnostics built into your Mac. I would run this if and when you get the first disconnect after doing above steps.

The SSID on both bands is different. I was connected to 5Ghz band and had a problem, then switched to the 2.5GHz. Same behaviour on both.

I was very surprised when it brought the network down.

I'll try your suggestions.
