My mom would need a new router (with RJ-45 WAN socket) that also has basic WLAN.

So nothing fancy is needed.
(But as her condition is getting weaker we have now installed some smart machines to her - so can remotely monitor some things... ex. latest new fridge/freezer - so don't leave door open)
Just now noticed, her current router to be very outdated... So am thinking to get a newer one...

But as can't visit her on regular basis even - it needs to be quite maintenance free... But still I would like it to be reliable and safe...
So got any recommendations on affordable models I could look for?

If you can't visit her on a regular basis - ISP provided Gateway.

Years ago, i installed a pair of AC68U (one upstairs, one down, ethernet backhaul over powerline) behind the ISP router(wireless off) to provide wireless connectivity for a set of Amazon Echo Show 8s so that i could video talk and check up on aging parents anywhere in the house. Stock firmware. So far no real issues although the Amazon occasional advert or triggering of Alexa have led to some confusion due to dementia. The built in mic and speaker is an advantage although there are probably consumer security cameras with same now.

i agree with above, if the ISP gateway is enough, then that should be the least complicated and most reliable. And ISP can service for you if the folks there can handle the intrusion.

Something to consider is something like the Google Nest WiFi mesh kits if needs are basic as Google updates the firmware on a regular basis, they're pretty much plug and play, and you can manage them remotely thru the Google Home App.
