merlin VPN connects by itself

I have an rt ac 88 u running merlin 384.11.2 I use a proxy with a ddns to stream, I used to use express VPN but had to swap to smart dns due to slow connection issues. When I turn off the proxy and use the VPN for a while, after disconnecting and turning the VPN server off and turning the client/location off and going back to the proxy to stream, the client will turn itself on again by itself.

Now I not only turn the server and client off I always hit apply to make sure. I then check the VPN status and everything is stopped but like Merlin the magician (not the firmware writer) it will magically turn itself on again . When I check, the server is still off but the client is back on and connected. It will do this a couple of times before it settles down. I even reset the router itself but it still happens.

Can someone shed some light on this for me . Am I doing something wrong? I mean its as basic as it gets on off right?

For VPN Clients, make sure log level to 3.

Search for clues in the System Log. Key words to search for are:

ovpn-clientX, where the X is the client number, e.g. ovpn-client1

How did you reset the router? After resetting did you import a saved backup file? When was the last time you performed a reset prior to this version? Did you reset the router after flashing the 384.11_2 firmware?

It doesn't sound like your router is in a good/known state.

The link in my signature below will give you some options to help get it there. :)

If you are rebooting after changing settings and you have "Automatic start at boot time" set to "Yes" in the OpenVPN Client screen, then the VPN Client will start up automatically after a reboot.

Ok so i think this problem only hapen

I have tried both, first just by turning the client off and also by turning the client off then hitting the apply button.

I do import the VPN file.

I do factory /hard resets every other month or so and yes I did a hard reset after the Merlin update.

And yes I think my router is not healthy at present. It is a very busy router my wife retired about a year ago so she streams a lot now. It is about three years ago when I first fired it up and probably averages about ten hours of use a day.

Can you get them serviced? I do want to get the AX model but still, want to use this one for the bedroom.

I will check out your link, thanks I really appreciate your help and support.

Where do I find your link . I am still new to this forum and I am not sure what you mean by; my signature below;

Oh crap I missed this response and yes I do have it set to automatic.I can't believe how I missed such a simple setting.I feel really really dumb thanks guys you all are the best ( can you feel the love ❤) LOL

Ok having resolved the"magic VPN start issue" I still believe that my router is not well as l&ld suggests I tried a couple other VPN provides" free trials" and one wouldn't load the location file at all and the other loaded ok but when I tried streaming media again it would just keep dropping the internet connection.I tried several times with the same results.I haven't mentioned the VPN providers because I don't think the problem lay with them so I don't want to upset them but suffice to say that they were reputable companies

Or you have signature display disabled in your profile on this site :)

No I just checked and the box is checked I think it must be this old 8.1 Windows phone .As soon as the tablet recharges enough to stay on for more than a minute I'll check if I can see signatures on that Windows 10 . I really need to go shopping we desperately need another laptop or desktop

No I didn't but I see it under your post t
hanks.Ps I'm using on old Windows phone not a PC may have something to do with not getting his signature thanks again

When using the forums on a mobile phone, try holding it horizontal to see the signatures. :)

ok thanks ill try that
No it doesn't come up on my windows phone it does however on my Nokia 5 Android phone. I think it is just because this is an old Windows 8.1 phone not much good for much anymore except for checking stuff out on the web when my better half is on the tablet.ps I only use it instead of my Android so I don't have to keep recharging it
