Migrating from a VDSL 50/20 to Fiber 1000/300 - advices needed

Hi guys,

what is the general consensus regarding asymmetrical fiber links when it comes to QOS?

I mean, I've read several threads, but I'm a bit confused.

Right now I'm using cake with a VDSL running at 50mbps Down 20mbps Up on a GT-AX11000. Cake is doing wonders with this poor link, in a 4 people house. I'm fully aware that the processing power of the router will not be enough to handle higher throughputs.

So, due to the fact the I'm going to migrate to a fiber link with 1gbps down and 300mbps up very soon, what do you suggest for QOS settings/scripts?

With asymmetrical fiber at 1 gbps/300 mbps, doubt you'll need QoS enabled. You should not see any issues at all. If you do you can always go back to 50/20mbps since you're not having any issues with it. :)

Yeah, just let your router do its thing. It will feel much better not having to slow down to watch ins/outs as much as it did.
In fact, you'll probably make it happiest by running diversion, skynet and unbound on it ;)

No, this is your personal choice. The router will be happier without any custom scripts.

No hiccups here, running with 1000/200. No QoS ever needed, 4 average users in house (youtube, video calls, browsing, streaming...), Main router in ground floor, mesh node in first floor.

Still a good router in 2025, you do not need anything else. Maybe just another node/AP if your house is a bit bigger/has more floors...

this thread has made me ponder the differences/use cases between QoS and vLANs, and I'm starting to take the position that vLAN segmentation can potentially be a better way to manage an network to get the most out of an internet connection than QoS, because you can then institute DSCP tagging within EACH vLAN for further optimization/tuning as needed...I think. right?

This complication is not needed on a small network. You can do VLAN segmentation if you like, but traffic shaping on the WAN side is good enough.
