What is considered the most stable firmware for wireless? I care more about stability than speed. Thanks.

Well, you first have to tell us which router.

I've played with many stock and Merlin's firmwares and they have all been stable. I'm running .4561 right now and it seems fine. Stability shouldn't be an issue with any firmware for this router. But I could be wrong. I am only speaking from my own experiences.

Even though many here have moved onto newer firmware with some security features corrected and new options offered, I have stuck with ASUS firmware version 3.0.0.4.276 . I use the router as a router and not as a media center or NAS/Print server. This version's wireless capabilities match my needs, in particular the need to run a wireless 2.4ghz B WEP connection to only the Internet using a Guest slot for my old TIVO to phone home and still getting max speed out of the non guest 2.4 and 5ghz slots. This might change if TW ever supports IPv6 in my area. Living in a rural area without neighbors at arms length, perhaps I can get away with this older firmware for awhile. 73, N2UBP

i find 3.0.0.4.270 the most stable release!

It is everyones freedom to choose a product and firmware version.

I think though it is not proper to advise the use of products or firmware versions that are known to be vulnerable to malicious activities.
In this case Asus WRT firmware versions up to and including 3.0.0.4.374.4422 do solve various security issues and are included in the latest version 3.0.0.4.374.4561 (the last one also includes the strongly advised IPv6 firewall, without a firewall the use of IPv6 should be discouraged).

In other words, the relatively old firmware versions 3.0.0.4.270, 3.0.0.4.271 and 3.0.0.4.276 do have serious security problems which are solved in newer versions.
Despite probably better wireless range or stability, the use of older firmware shall be discouraged.
The latest Asus version works fine for most users, and the latest Merlin version seem to fix problems for the remaining few users with range issues (and Merlin adds some nice features).

wouterv, I agree 100% with your post.

Old router firmware is like using a system on the 'net without applying any updates to it.

Bad not only for the already or soon to be infected system - but for everyone else connected to that network too.

THe firmware that I've had the best results with is in my signature line below. I've tried the various versions as they come out, but have come back to this version for stability, wireless coverage, and it also works well with IPv6 if you're using that.

Good luck finding the best version for you, it might take some trial-and-error, but that's part of the fun of it *smile*.

Your sentence not stating what version you have is a little frustrating. Signatures turned off here. ;)

Out of curiosity, why not see all the information in a posting and have signatures on? Then you wouldn't have to ask people what's in their signature lines...

I understand if you don't want to answer, but I've never had a reason to actually go and turn them off, so this makes me curious.

Short answer: browsing is faster.

Just too many things to read in a day and turning off signatures, ads, etc. just makes the most of the limited time I have to benefit and hopefully give back a little to the forums I frequent.

Note that Tim has a fairly strict policy when it comes to signatures. For instance, no URLs are allowed in them. So, expect forum signatures to rarely be longer than two lines.
