Multicast on Lan?

Barry Holmes

New Around Here
Hi all, Firstly... I am not in anway a network engineer!
I am trying to read the data form a local device on my lan (Owl Intuition elecricity monitor) I understand that it sends the data via multicast. I have an an RT-Ac68U running the latest merlin.... I have a w10 computer on the same lan with small program that is sniffing for the multicast output but I believe the router is preventing this... Could someone point me in the right direction or is it just a no-no from the start?
thanks in advance...

How are the devices connected, wired or wireless?

What firmware version are you using ("latest" is not specific)?

The device is on my internal lan with a local ip as is the listening pc.... the unit is designed to send data directly to a remote server and I belive it uses multicast as the local independant software that has been built listens for multicast data also when I sniff its ports they are all closed! The router firmware version is 384.12

The only way to sniff a switch port is to mirror it. You need a hub to sniff all the traffic.

Multicast traffic goes to all layer 2 ports unless you manage it on a large network.

This is where my lack of network knowledge fails me..... The listening program on my w10pc setup instructions say that 'on some home networks it just won't work at all because your router doesn't allow through UDP packets'
