I seem to have corrupted openvpn client profiles. What is the best way to purge them & start fresh? I have tried the default route. That doesnt seem to fix the problem. My only other recourse has been to reset & reload a different version of firmware & go from there. Not being savy with linux etc what is easiest way to tackle this issue in the future? ( meaning what code to run via terminal for example)

Click on the "Default" button at the bottom of the OpenVPN page. This will reset settings to factory defaults, and also erase existing certificates.

i have done that. Something is still off. when i do a status of vpn is seems to be connecting but there is no yellow writing for address connected & it is ignoring my policy rules. not sure what is corrupted or how to fix other than reflashing firmware.

Look at the System Log, it will tell you what is going on.

Reflashing a firmware does absolutely nothing.
