NAS or simple USB drive

Hi all,

Thanks for reading my post.

Current Setup: 1 TB Qnap ts 110 pro NAS device

Question: I am running out of space , so been thinking should i buy a simple USB to add to QNAP or another NAS device,?
Also as of now no backup device is there..

Can someone suggest best solution in this ...
Budget limit: 500 USD MAX

If you are happy with the QNAP's performance, just buy a second NAS with a 3 TB drive. Back up the QNAP to it, upgrade the QNAP to a 3 TB drive and then set up an incremental backup to the second NAS.

Note that the second NAS doesn't have to be a QNAP or particularly speedy, since it is just for backup, which will be incremental after the first run. WD MyBook Live is probably a good choice.

Be sure both NASes are on UPS and are in physically different areas of the home.

If you have the discipline to carry a USB drive offsite on a regular basis, then
upgrade the QNAP to a larger drive and get two USB drives for backup, alternating between them.

Hello Tim,
Thanks for your reply.
This sound completely logical … though if you could suggest something with Seagate.. have bought WD before and that HDD only lasted for little less than year.
Again thanks

Look for an older-version QNAP or Synology and put your own drive in, then.

Just one last query...

As both are have (assuming i buy WD) gigabit ports and i have wndr3000 as router... what kind of data transfer speed would be there between these two... or client.. as WD will be accessed from Qnap .. and i think that would be very slow

any idea..

thanks for all your help

None of the NASes I suggest will be limited by Gigabit Ethernet. Check the NAS Charts for the performance benchmarks for WD MyBook Live and other NASes.
