Small Net NAS overhaul project!

Hey SNB community. I am looking for some guidence on a overhaul project to my current set up. Right now my man NAS is a windows 2012 server using storace spaces.
I am not impressed and am planning to move to either freeNAS or Solaris (prob sol for ZFS.)

I have considered a number of different options, including throwing the t300 or Asus in the NORCO RPC-4224 case and getting some ibm m1015 SAS cards to doing a DAS setup connected to a VM server utilizing both box's.

At this point I need some advice my two main goals are cost and low energy consumption. I would like to keep cost low by reusaing as much hardware as possiable, at the same time I don't want a huge power bill.

Ideas-

WOL the VM server to only use when I need to do lab work. - great idea to me as I do lots of work remotly.
24/7 low power NAS

cooler but unessary - DAS like connection
FC or infinband connection between NAS and VM server.

Goals - may be repeated...
Use as much of my existing hardware as possiable - would like to save cost. ( low prority goal as I may just sell off T300)
Scalable - up to 30 TB in the future.
Thin Provisioning (so either ZFS or Storage Spaces)
Remote access options via SFTP - Prefer not to have seprate server for this.
Good profmance. ( main reason I am going this direction is beacuse I am not happy with storage spaces. I would probualy get better results with this on my older server tho! Issue is mainly because of RC 217 card.)
DNLA.... Currntly use servio, could just use CIFS or NFS tho. I stream to WD live.
