NAS units mountable in 2-post rack?

netcoolery

New Around Here
Another Noob looking to take the plunge with a NAS unit, but this question is a bit different from the usual.

I'm fortunate enough to have a little "computer room" closet with a two-post rack. I've been able to mount a network switch, a KVM unit and so forth and would like to rack-mount whatever NAS unit I buy.

I was looking at the Synology 4-disk unit, but it appears that the "rack-mount" unit isn't even rack mountable without an additional rail kit - and even then it looks like it requires a four-post rack.

Anyone out there with a two-post setup with a NAS unit mounted?

Rackmount NASes are pretty deep. You need a four-post rack.

Don't think so, "consumer grade" and "rack" tend to be mutually exclusive. The commercial grade rack mounts tend to be heftier four post 1U to 4U server chassis.

You could build your own....kinda cool that, gut an old switch, mITX, four drives.

There's all sorts of deep stuff that can mount on a two-post rack - virtually everything Cisco makes, for example. The key point is that rails for two-post systems typically attach so that the unit is more or less center-mounted (front to back) so that it's close to its center of gravity.

I can fall back to a generic 1u - 2 post mounting kit, but those typically require a little bit of fussing. I was hoping for a manufacturer that had addressed this.

the netgear readynas 1500 and 2100 are short lightweight ones which can be mounted in a 2 post rack (just 4 screws at the front).
