New Around Here
Hi all,
Where to start?
Basically i need a NAS for home use, but having read the site im very confused and would appreciate a bit of help :o

I will be using the NAS at home, connected to my netgear modem/router and it will be used to store my iTunes librabry of music & video and my iphoto library. So basically music, video & photo's. This will all be accessed by my macbook over the network!
Thats it. Simple! :) I'm basically using a NAS as my laptop HDD (750GB) is getting full.

So i looked into drobo's, but decided no, as the data i'll be storing in invaluble! Photo's & video's of my son & family etc which only exist digitally. Then i thought about a RAID solution, but then read the article on here how RAID IS NOT a backup.

So have finally settled on getting 2 x Buffalo Linkstation Duo 4TB
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00308JH2Q/?tag=smallncom-21

One will be the main storage connected to the network setup as just one 4TB drive & the other will be used to backup the first one! Not sure if they will be sat side by side and connected via USB or put the other upstairs also on the network.

So, how does this sound? Will it work, is it crap etc etc

Thanks in advance for any help :o

Your plan is basically ok. But you can't back up one NAS to another via USB. The two must be connected to the same network. Be sure to use Ethernet unless you are ok with backup taking a long time.

Note that Buffalo NASes will back up only to other Buffalo NASes over the network.

Make sure both NASes are connected to UPSes (battery backup).

For your application, you really can use most any NAS.

Why are you using a dual-drive NAS?

Thankyou for the info! :)

I've estimated that 4TB should suit my need's fine, and i read previously that NASes tend to only back up to the same brand etc, so just picked the Buffalo's!
Also didnt think they did single drive NASes in that capacity? Buffalo dont seem to

Seems like all NASes except for Buffalos will run network backups to any devices supporting rsync.

The current limit for single drive NASes is 3 TB, which is the largest drive you can buy right now.
