Need help choosing NAS for home use

New Around Here
I have been reading lots of reviews and specification, and everything just became so confusing.

I just want a simple storage solution (1TB is enough) which I can access remotely. In particular, I carry my laptop everywhere, so I want to access the data as local mapped network drive in window explorer (maybe FTP; HTTP if previous two optional are not possible). I will also be dealing with directories, so directory transfer rate should be decent.

I narrowed my search down to following:
1) BuffaloTech Linkstation Pro High Performance LS-VL (1.6GHZ,512Ram)
2) Iomega Home media cloud edition (600MHZ dual core, 512Ram)
3) WesternDigital My book live (does not have USB for expansion later on)

What would you chose?
Let me know if I should entertain other brands.

Thanks in advance!

Of those three manufacturers, the one I'm most comfortable with is Iomega. I don't have any direct knowledge of the listed products, but have used products from all three.

Is expansion important? What percentage of traffic is internet versus local? Do you want to be able to do drive replacement?

Easiest and cheapest for combination of local and cloud access is Pogoplug. See Pogoplug Pro Reviewed.

Buffalo CloudStor is based on Pogoplug bus also supports local SMB access without an app running Buffalo Cloudstor Reviewed

Note that if you are always accessing via wireless and Internet, don't waste your money on NAS performance. You'll always be limited to < 12.5 MB/s throughput.

First, Thanks for replying.

No, Expansion is not important, but just in case in future. Drive replacement is not important at this point. I wold say 50-50 for internet vs local traffic.

pogoplug looks similar to iomega iconnect. They require having separate USB hard drive.
By the way, I currently use removable usb drive which I carry everywhere to have access to my files. I want to put them on a cloud for easy access. Do you still think Iconnect or pogoplug will yield better performance than my #1 and #2 NAS choices from above? In the end i want to setup mapped networkdrive which connects to my cloud.

Again, performance isn't an issue because you'll be limited by both wireless and Internet. Pogoplug will be plenty fast.

You can certainly remote access any NAS. But you need to open ports in your router and have a dynamic DNS client if you don't have a static IP.

Pogoplug is easier to use than Iomega Cloud connect.
