My 1st real NAS, yay..
Installed the drives, waited almost 2 days for the volume creation, created folder, set up user priv., went to my win7 machines and what?!
Couldn't get to it. Tried \\syno-name, tried \\192.xxx, no go.
I could browse the files via browser, ping the synobox, search via assistant. Just can't seem to get the win file server up. It's enabled on the mngt page.

Could anyone please provide some suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

EDIT:
Make that one Win7 machine unable to see \\<Syno>
Of course, it's the machine that I use to run the Assistance SW. Hmm...
Another Win7 PC is able to access it just fine.

For me, Getting Win7 to use generic SMB and "workgroup" networking was/is a struggle.

If you have an XP computer, try it, for workgroup shares without the Win7 confusing mess of "homegroups". At least I have yet to make sense of it.

I did get my SMB NAS to work with win7, but first, I had to get XP and Win7 two see each others' shares. Then move on to the LInux-shares on the NAS.

I'm retracting this post.

Found out what was causing the problem:
Computer Browser (service) was disabled.

Thanks Stevech. I got it working now.
I always disable homegroup, libraries and other win7 specific features - and in this case, I just proved that I didn't know what I was doing :D

I'd like to read somewhere how to disable homeGroup and make Win7 act like WinXP. I fumble doing so amongst Win7's confusing network config screens. Afterwards, I seem to have to do special things with the folder attributes and user access lists. And it's a random process because I don't get the big picture of what Microsoft is doing in Win7 with ye ole Workgroup mode, esp. when there's a mix of Linux/NAS, XP and Win7 computers.
