Need opinions on the D-Link DNS-323

New Around Here
Hi,
I need a NAS for my home and I don't know much about them other than what I have read in reviews so would appreciate some expert advice on the subject.

Recently i have been considering the D-Link DNS-323 since it costs only $100 dollars at memory express. However I know that this is a fairly old unit, but it seems that the newer version of the DNS-323 that's supposed to be available soon won't improve performance much and the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay doesn't seem to offer any better performance either.

I need a NAS mainly as a backup for four computers with about 2TB worth of data to Backup, but I would install right away two 2TB drives in the NAS for future proofing.

Anyway I would really appreciate any help and feedback on what you guys/girls think of the DNS-323.

Thanks

also most computers will be backing up via my wireless n network which has an actual throughput of around 40-50Mb/s so any nas that performs beyond that will be overkill

D-Link: Caveat Emptor.

As to the price: I've bought two el cheap-o NASes (Airlink and Netgear), not expecting much in speed or features. Even so, I was disappointed. Speed too slow to be useful for more than storing photos and documents.

What do you think of the netgear ready nas ultra 2. I found one for $280 diskless on newegg. Is it the same as the ready nas pro version?

I and many here would recommend the Synology DS211(j) or QNAP equivalent for a two-disk NAS.

On this web site there is a good critique of most consumer NASes.

Two TB of data to be written to a DNS323 would take a LONG time. I gave up on my DNS323 when 50GB was taking 2 hours. The limiting factor in the DNS is the speed of the CPU. Just too slow to move TBs worth of data.

The DNS323 also was noisy and ran hot.

Yeah.. I have a DNS 323..

Stay away from that. It is slow. Very Very Slow.

As soon as I get some free $s, I plan on upgrading.

I've yet to see a GOOD D-Link product.
They are in the 1950's in Software Quality Assurance and Configuration Management, IMO.
