Hey guys would it be a big upgrade getting the RT-AX58U, at the moment I went back to my Ac3100.

I did have the AX88U, but I was having many issues with it, not on the FW side but on the hardware side. The AX88U was randomly restarting on its own, dropping wifi connection, and other weird issues. I know it was not merlin's FW, I followed LD's guide on how to reset router after fw guide.

Other than the AX tech, is there really a big difference, maybe a better faster cpu? Also I have a 1800 sq foot home, thick walls but I dont really have issues with wifi with my ac3100.

Thanks in advance guys.

The AX88Us do not have design/general problems... they would have appeared in this forum several times already and this is not the case, and it is the more powerful router -merlin supported- that asus makes, so with this said, it is equally likely that you get another 'bad apple' picking an ax58 or another ax88. I assume you cannot demand a warranty exchange of your ax88u which would be the reasonable thing to do if it really has a hw problem.

Now, specifically speaking about the ax58, I would say that except for the 'ax' thing it is really not a big leap coming from an ac3100. In fact, processor speed is almost the same (1.4 vs 1.5 Ghz and 1 additional core), RAM memory size is equal (512), 4 ethernet ports both, USB the same, and so on... only the wifi bandwidth is different.. but you need to run in ax mode or 160Mhz width channels to realize... and as of today, not that many devices support that.

I would be hesitant to upgrade to an RT-AX58U if your current router is an RT-AC3100. To be sure, I haven't had my hands on an RT-AX58U, but except for AX specific hardware, the RT-AC3100 is still a very capable piece of equipment. :)

While technically a faster, Tri-core, CPU, in practice it is nothing to be worried about.

The RT-AX88U, on the other hand, is a worthwhile upgrade (if you can get a working example). :)

Thanks for the input, I bought my ax88u from bestbuy and bought the insurance, as I always do. They are sold out of the ax88u and had to go back to the ac3100.

Guess I will stick to the ac 3100 until they get more ax88u in stock I guess.

Thanks LD.

The one thing I did notice on the AC3100. I use qos and sometimes the bandwidth limiter. Once I enable the BWL, I still get my speeds that I have on my sig. On the AX88U, if I enabled BWL it would cut my speeds in half. I made a thread about it when I first got the AX88U.

You should just keep your 3100 until wifi 6E comes out. The current AX routers do not support the 6 GHz band and the future ones will. From what i have read the current AX models will not be upgraded via firmware so they will be come outdated rather quickly at that point. And with all the congestion on the wifi 5 Ghz band and AX needing 160 mhz band width having 6 Ghz can be a major deal.

I agree with @Kal-EL, with the latest information available, and with your RT-AC3100 working well in your network, I would hold off buying a new router until you actually need one. :)

The issue with the BWL on the RT-AX88U may be due to it being a faulty unit? I don't use BWL on mine, so I don't know if it is inherent in the hardware/firmware or not.

I see, there is a weird issue with the AC3100 using BWL, it works fine and my speeds dont get cut in half.

If I restart the ac3100 something happens, my speeds get cut in half if I do a restart on the ac3100.

It has something to do with the " Nat Acceleration " under WAN, Switch Control.

Right now on the Nat Acceleration is says, " CTF (Cut Through Forwarding) is enabled.

If I restart my ac3100 that changes and my speeds are cut in half, and it also says something different on the Nat Acceleration tab?

I forget what is says.

Ok restarted my router and now under Nat Acceleration it says " Nat Traffic is processed by CPU"

Kinda weird,
