R6300v1 last f/w is more than a year old and version 2 have recent firmware updates so I was thinking of updating my v1 with v2 firmware but no sure whether it will work or brick my router.
I'm at a loss to wonder why you would even ask that question. Go to the Netgear site and download the version you need.

Probably because netgear has stopped releasing firmware updates for the v1.
The v1 is a 600mhz single core cpu router. The v2 is an 800mhz dual core cpu. Very different hardware.
You can't use the v2 firmware on the v1.

can I use the latest R6300v2 firmware in V1? anyone have tried that and works? thanks.

In simple words - no

It's likely a different hardware design, enough so that even if it were to let you flash it, you might end up with an expensive and attractive paperweight.
