New Around Here
Hi all,
I was looking over internet to resolve my problem about my new NAS file copy speed.
I read lots of threads (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/21601-17-slow-drive or http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=36820&start=15).
This is my setup.
NAS -cat5-> router (tested with all ports) -cat5e-> powerline (tested speed up to 140Mbit/s between pc <-> router) -> powerline -cat5e-> pc

Initially my speed was 800kb/s while copying from pc to NAS, then, I used all the tips found in the threads up there and I moved speed to 4.5 - 5 MByte/s, but I think that this is still slow.

Also, when I stream any video from NAS to PC using VLC, it "buffers" (doesn't go fluid...)
Any tips?

Which powerline kit do you have? Based on looking at the Powerline Charts and my own testing here at home with a Netgear Powerline AV 500 setup your not doing that bad at 4.5 MB/sec. I think with my setup I was able to see speeds up to 11 MB/sec for file transfers over the Powerline part of the network but those speeds fluctuate for me. Sometimes it can be high but most of the time it is more around 6 MB/sec for my setup. I would think even at the speeds you are seeing you should still be able to play videos smoothly.

I looked up VLC and it looks like it should work ok but it might be trying to stream using UDP packets instead of TCP. I know in some cases UDP speeds can be terrible compared to TCP speeds over the same network.

I guess my first question would be is it possible to not use the powerline in between your PC and the NAS? In my network I am using powerline to connect my router to a gigabit switch which are in different rooms. Like this...

Cable Modem
|
Router
|
Powerline
|
Gigabit Switch
/ \
NAS PCs

So when I transfer files between any one of my PCs and the NAS I get gigabit speeds. Then only when I am accessing the internet do I use the powerline connection.

Any other computers on your network that you can test with?

Connect PC directly to router (bypassing powerline adapters). Test again.

Are your router LAN ports 10/100 or 10/100/1000?

In the NAS admin (Frontview) click NETWORK -> INTERFACE -> SHOW ERRORS. Post results here.

NAS -cat5-> router (tested with all ports) -cat5e-> powerline (tested speed up to 140Mbit/s between pc <-> router) -> powerline -cat5e-> pc
How did you measure the 140 Mbps over powerline?

Look for noise sources that can be reducing powerline input. Cellphone/tablet "wall-wart" chargers on the same circuit can knock down throughput.

I'm getting a switch in order to test it with giga connection.
In NAS interface I get 1000 Mbit / Full-Duplex .
This is errors (in italian...):
Negoziazione automatica 0
Pacchetti danneggiati 0
Disconnetti 0
Portante False 0
Errori inattività 0
Errori di collegamento 0
Errori di ricezione 0
Errori di simbolo 0
Tag VLAN 0
Ritrasmissioni TCP 311594
Ritrasmissioni TCP non recuperate 62328

I measured the speed with the test speed software of TP-Link included in the bundle of the powerline.
