network drive permissions ASUS XT8

when using SONOS S2 to play mp3 files from the SAMBA music folder on the USB stick attached to the ASUS XT8 router, I suddenly started getting the message that the drive was no longer available

I reset permissions to everyone full control with all child folders and files on the shared folder.
No improvement

SONOS version 16.7
windows 11 home

As a general rule, routers are terrible NAS devices, especially when relying on cheap USB sticks.

On top of routers being poor NAS devices, even for simple media serving, it doesn't help that SONOS devices are notorious for having issues accessing media stored on other network devices. Particularly if SONOS wants SMB2 and the media severing device is configured for SMB1. If possible see if the SONOS device can be configured for SMB1.
